Genetics Activist GatheringFollowing on from our successful Talkshop pilot project, we organised a similar event for genetics activists in the UK. There is no need to describe in detail the importance of this issue, both in the agricultural and human spheres. This weekend event brought together a carefully selected group of genetics activists invited by Shifting Ground in collaboration with Dr. Sue Mayer of Genewatch UK. There are very few if any occasions during which a variety of activists gather to compare notes, exchange information, plan activities and learn from each other. Too often activists remain within their organisation or at least fail to find high quality time when they can explore their actions in depth. The added bonus of members of other groups nearly always sparks off new thoughts. This meeting was professionally facilitated, as was our original 'Talkshop', so as to obtain the benefits of both a structured approach to meetings and to allow for the spontaneity which might arise. For the most part, the agenda was constructed by the participants during a previous email discussion. This event took place in the Spring of 2001. |
